PREPARING FOR A POWER OUTAGE

Marlborough Lines works hard to minimize disruptions when they need to do maintenance on power substations and lines. But sometimes, a power outage is unavoidable for the safety of their crew. Here's some information to help you get ready for a power outage, whether planned or unplanned.

Upcoming Outages

If a planned outage is going to affect you, your electricity retailer will notify you. More information on specific outages is posted on our website.

Preparing for a Power Outage

When a power outage happens, whether planned or not, being prepared is crucial. Here are some simple tips:

Emergency Kit
Have a kit with essential items like flashlights, battery-operated radios, candles, a first aid kit, cash, fuel, and a list of important phone numbers. Make sure everyone knows where the kit is kept.

Water Supply:
Ensure you have enough drinking water, especially if your water supply relies on power. If you live in a rural area, have spare clean water for drinking, washing, and flushing toilets.

Meal Planning:
Plan and prepare meals in advance if you know an outage is coming. Consider spending the day with family or friends who aren't affected.

Handling Medical Equipment:
If someone depends on medical equipment, make sure your power company are aware of this, and ensure you have extra charged batteries for the device.

Charge Devices:
Charge your phone and important devices. Consider a mobile power pack as a back-up for emergencies.

Transport Considerations:
Garage doors and electric gates won't work, so prepare by opening or overriding them. Check your vehicle has enough fuel, and EV cars have full charge.

Device Protection:
Use surge protectors, especially for sensitive devices. Disconnect devices before the outage to preserve battery life.

Managing Power Outages on a Farm

For farmers, DairyNZ has useful information on managing power outages, including dealing with missed milkings, heat stress, and water use for livestock. Plan ahead for shade, shelter, and drinking water for cows. Consider alternatives for water supply if you don't have a generator. If needed, talk to your vet about skipping a milking to prevent health issues for your livestock.
